From Our Kitchen to the News: La Costa Mexican Food Featured on KGUN 9!

We are absolutely thrilled to share some exciting news with our wonderful community! Recently, La Costa Mexican Food was featured on KGUN 9 News to talk about our family traditions, the rising cost of ingredients, and the love that goes into every single tamal we wrap.

If you missed the segment, we wanted to take a moment to share the story behind the interview and what this recognition means to our mother-daughter team.

Keeping Tradition Alive

As many of you know, La Costa Mexican Food isn’t just a business; it is a tribute to my grandmother. As I told KGUN 9, "I want my grandma in this because this was her recipe."

Coming from Sinaloa, Mexico, our recipes have traveled miles and generations to reach Tucson. Working alongside my mother, Ernestina Sánchez, allows us to keep that legacy alive. Whether it’s 3:00 AM or 3:00 PM, when we are in the kitchen, we are connecting with our history. As my mom beautifully put it during the interview, "It's very emotional to work together, because this has been going on for generations."

Science Meets Flavor

One detail that often surprises our customers—and was highlighted in the news piece—is my background as a chemist. By day, I am a QAQC laboratory chemist with a PhD in aquatic chemistry. By night, I am a cook.

You might wonder how these two worlds connect. For me, the discipline of the laboratory translates directly to the kitchen. It ensures that we maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, avoid cross-contamination, and approach our "formulas" (recipes) with precision.

Quality Over Everything

The news story also touched on a reality facing many small businesses: rising costs. From meat to corn, prices have gone up this year. However, we made a promise to our customers and to ourselves: We will never compromise quality for a cheaper price.

  • Scratch-Made: We prepare all our sauces and broths ourselves.

  • Premium Ingredients: We only purchase high-quality meats and produce.

  • Freshness: Our slogan is "Freshly Made" for a reason. During the holiday rush, we often wake up at 3:00 AM to ensure the tamales delivered that afternoon were made that same morning.

Catch Us at the Tamal Festival!

The holiday season is our busiest time of year! Last year at the Tamal Festival, we sold out of 1,500 tamales in just two hours. This year, for the 20th Tamal Festival at Casino Del Sol, we are coming prepared with 3,000 tamales!

We would love to see you there this Saturday. Stop by our booth to say hello to the family and taste the tradition for yourself.
